Keep Sketching!

More Online Sketching and Painting Classes

If you’ve taken my online “Sketching & Watercolor Painting On-Location Intro” or in-person “Sketching & Watercolor Class Sampler” class, you, hopefully, have continued to do some sketching on your own. If you have, or even if you haven’t, I’m sure there are aspects of doing a sketch that you find challenging. I know for me mixing colors to achieve a green or red shade I wanted for foliage or bricks was difficult. Likewise, one-point and two-point perspective were sometimes a challenge.

I have created some short, online classes that address these topics as well as a few others to help you grow your sketching experience. These are perfect follow-up classes for my previous students as well as others who would like to expand their sketching and painting skills. We meet online using the Zoom video conferencing app and the classes last from one and one-half hours to five hours and cost only $10 per hour. You can register online for one, two or all of them.

For all but the iPad class you will need a pencil (HB or #2 - traditional or mechanical), a permanent black ink pen, watercolor brushes, watercolor paper or a watercolor sketchbook (I personally prefer 140lb/300 g/m², cold press paper), and at least three primary colors of watercolor (a red, yellow, and blue). You will also need a container of water, a paint mixing surface/palette, a strip of paper to test colors, and a paper towel or rag to wipe your brushes on.

Beyond Your 5-Color Palette: Making New Colors (2 Hours - $20)

In this 2-hour, online class we will quickly review mixing secondary and tertiary colors from the three primary colors in your palette and then move on to creating colors you undoubtedly find yourself needing. Do you know how to make gray? Brown? Are you trying to match the many shades of green you see in the landscape you want to paint? Perhaps you’re trying to match the reds you see in bricks on a house you’re painting. We will explore mixing paints in our limited palette to achieve all of these colors. Required: besides three primary colors of watercolor, you will need two additional colors such as a green and a Burnt Sienna or Raw Umber.

Exploring 1-Point Perspective (2 Hours- $20)

Perspective can be difficult but one-Point perspective, where you have one vanishing point, is very straight forward and relatively easy to draw. In this 2-hour class we will review the basic principles of 1-point perspective, do some practice drawing, and then mark up several photos to practice identifying the vanishing point and eye-level (horizon) line. We will then do two different 1-point perspective views of the same scene together. To finish, you will do one more 1-point perspective sketch of a photo of your choosing and finish it off with watercolor. If you don’t have watercolor materials, that’s fine. All you need is a pencil and printer paper to participate.

The Variations of 2-Point Perspective (2 Hours - $20)

In this 2-hour class we will examine several photos showing 2-point perspective as well as practice drawing boxes above, on, and below the horizon line to see how this changes the view of the box. We will then transfer that experience to a photo of a 2-point Perspective Street scene, which we will sketch and paint.

Paint First, Ink Later (2 Hours -$20)

Instead of sketching out the scene in pencil and ink and then adding watercolor, we will experiment with analyzing the scene and identifying shapes and color. Then we will start by adding paint to form the shapes and shadows we see. Next we will add our ink marks to more clearly identify the elements and details of the scene and finish up with any additional paint if we need it.

Next Offering: TBD (Register for this Class!)

Creating Art with Ink Washes (2 Hours -$20)

In this 2-hour class you will learn how to do a pencil sketch of a building, ink it using a water soluble ink pen, then add water to create shadows and a range of values in your sketch. Required: you will need a black water soluble ink pen such as a Papermate Flair pen.

Next Offering: TBD (Register for this Class!)

Sketching Virtually Using Google Street View (90 Minutes - $15)

Google Street View

If you’re not able to travel to far away places or even close by cities to sketch and paint, you can still do so virtually by using Google Street View in a browser or use the Google Street View app directly. In this one and a half hour online class we will visit a city selected by the group and then choose a scene to sketch. We’ll analyze the scene and discuss how to approach our initial pencil sketch. Then we’ll ink in the pencil sketch and paint it. Required: you will need to have two devices (computer, smartphone, or tablet) with access to the Internet so that you can join our Zoom class with one and Google Street View with the other at the same time.

Next Offering: TBD (Register for this Class!)

Sketching & Painting with Procreate (6 Hours -$60)

In this three-part, online course we will explore the options for sketching on an iPad using the Procreate drawing app.

This class is currently in testing and I hope to offer it in December 2020! Read more about the class on the class web page.
